Jiri lies at an altitude of 1,905 metres (6,250 feet) and is the eastern-most terminus of the highway coming from Kathmandu. Bus service is available from Kathmandu but the 184 km ride takes 6 to 8 hours due to now,arr winding roads and checkpoints along the high-way. A company of the Nepal Army is stationed in town and visitors' equipment and backpacks might be searched. There are number of lodges available along either side of the main road mainly in Jiri Bazaar. This is the shortest distance from Kathmandu for Everest Base Camp trekking. Also another important feature is that it is the traditional and historical route to the Everest Base Camp, used by Hillary and Tznging making their way up to Everest summit.
Jiri is a small village with beautiful scenario views but being the difficult and long route trail most of the trekkers (around 95%) choose to fly into the small airstrip at Lukla. Only few of the trekkers enjoy passing through this trail specifically those who are adventures. The wide range of altitudes, diversity in floras and faunas, local cultures as well as different indigenous lifestyles is some of the important part of the trek. As already mentioned wide range of altitudes, it takes trekkers starting from midland hills to Himalaya. Spring is the best season to advance for trail as it provides impressive landscapes along with bloomed rhododendron forest. The majority of trail passes through amazing rollercoaster of mountain terrain and number of idyllic village where you get to explore and observe the local tribe to know about their way of living and culture. The trail not only goes upward but also has multiple downward sections which are probably the greatest advantage of the trek.
